Michael McCarthy

Michael McCarthy's recent West End theatre credits include Javert in the stage musical Les Miserables at The Queen's Theatre, London.

Born in Cork, Ireland. Michael began his career at the age of 15 performing leading roles at the Cork Opera House. After receiving his diploma from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts he then won a full scholarship to Stephens College in the United States where he obtained a bachelor of fine arts degree in theatre, music and voice. He is also one of the few survivors of the Okoboji Theatre.

Michael's musical theatre credits include Inspector Javert in Les Miserables (London, Sydney, Melbourne, Birmingham, Plymouth, Edinburgh, Manchester and Dublin) for which he was nominated for best male artist in Australia. Dr Akizuki in Out of the Blue at the Shaftesbury Theatre (London), Thomas Inkle in Inkle and Yarico (Edinburgh, Washington DC), The Phantom in Ken Hill’s Phantom of the Opera (UK Tour).

In the United States he appeared as Count Carl Magnus in A little Night Music, Dominique in The Baker’s Wife, Tom in Brigadoon, Maxz in Cabaret and Cole in the Cole Porter Revue.

In Ireland Michael was Sir Lancelot in Camelot, Patrick Dennis in Mame, Tom Trainer in No No Nannette and the Red Shadow in The Desert Song.

Theatre appearances include Marco in A View from a Bridge (USA and Edinburgh), Duke in Twelfth Night, Mr Loveday in London Cuckolds, The Officer in The Hostage, Leonard in Pyjama Tops, Harry McMichael in Not Now Darling, Laurey in Little Women and Tennisee William’s Ah Wilderness.

On film Michael has appeared as the Gypsy King in The Tenth Kingdom, the Priest in Jesus Christ Superstar, Inkle & Yarico, Careers, Irish Lighthouses and I Believe in Angels.

In addition Michael has also appeared as a featured soloist in a tribute to Ira Gershwin, Who Could Ask For Anything More?. He appeared in an open air concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Dulwich Festival. As Javert in the Les Miserables open air concert at the Chelmsford Festival drawing an attendance of over 25,000. At the Royal Albert Hall, Michael played the role of Factory Foreman in the Tenth Anniversary Concert of Les Miserables and this was his first role in the West End back in 1990.

Michael has performed for the Irish Proms and numerous concerts with the RTE Concert Orchestra in Dublin as well as various concerts around the UK, Germany, Spain, Gibraltar and the USA. Michael has had two solo album releases, Michael McCarthy Living For the Moment and Michael McCarthy Broadway.
